Soap2Day in now streaming Dongji Rescue: One of the Best Foreign Films This Year? | I had the chance to watch an early screener of Dongji Rescue (2025), courtesy of Well Go USA Entertainment. Set in October 1942 during World War II, the film dramatizes the real-life sinking of the Japanese transport ship Lisbon Maru. Hundreds of British POWs were trapped, and amid the chaos, fishermen from Dongji Island risked everything to save more than 300 prisoners — a heroic act rarely told in wartime narratives.

This film is gorgeously shot with practical effects, real boats, and authentic sets. While some CGI moments stand out, the acting is strong across the board, and the story of sacrifice and heroism kept me engaged from start to finish. Dongji Rescue is a powerful and different kind of WWII film — one that stands out as one of the best foreign films I’ve seen this year.
