In 2017, during my exchange at the University of Montreal, I met Echo in a documentary class. At the time, she had already been studying film in Canada for over a year since moving from France and was gradually adapting to Quebec’s weather. Since I was only there for one semester, I was fortunate to have her as a friend—thanks to her, I got to explore the natural beauty of the "Maple Leaf Country." Before I left Montreal, she kindly took me in and even made hotpot for me. Though it was just a semester, it was clear that she was an independent and determined person.

In the years that followed, we were both busy with our studies and careers in different countries, and we rarely kept in touch. Seven years later, when I had the opportunity to return to Montreal for a short program, Echo told me that she had moved from Quebec to Ontario and was now working as a visual effects artist. As fate would have it, just before I left Canada again, she and her partner warmly hosted me.

Though it was only a brief two-day visit, I felt like I had stepped into another world, experiencing their life and exchanging stories of the past years. In a fleeting moment, I realized that seven years had passed in the blink of an eye. As they saw me off, I jokingly said, “See you in another seven years.” Back then, we were both studying film, but now, we’ve each taken different paths.
