This summer, in honor of the iconic movie that ignited a global fascination with the ocean’s most misunderstood predator, National Geographic presents JAWS @ 50: THE DEFINITIVE INSIDE STORY.

Directed by acclaimed documentarian Laurent Bouzereau (Faye, Music by John Williams), this 90-minute film offers an immersive journey into the making of Jaws—from Peter Benchley’s bestselling novel to the cinematic triumph that became the first true summer blockbuster. This behind-the-scenes deep dive explores the film’s enduring influence on pop culture, filmmaking, and shark conservation. Think you know the whole story behind Jaws? Think again.

Produced by Amblin Documentaries and Nedland Films in collaboration with Wendy Benchley and Laura Bowling, JAWS @ 50 is the only officially authorized Jaws summer documentary. It features the return of Steven Spielberg, who revisited the landmark project that launched his career and secured the final cut—creative control he’s maintained for 50 years.

The documentary includes never-before-seen archival material from Spielberg’s and Benchley’s personal collections—rare outtakes, home videos, and candid new interviews. Spielberg opens up about the production challenges, including battling a malfunctioning mechanical shark, enduring unpredictable weather, and grappling with post-production anxiety that made him fear the film would ruin his career.

JAWS @ 50 also reexamines the so-called “Jaws effect”—the cultural wave of shark fear the film sparked—and reframes it as a legacy of curiosity, respect, and awe for these magnificent ocean predators.

The documentary features exclusive interviews with original cast and crew, including Joe Alves, Lorraine Gary, Carl Gottlieb, Jeffrey Kramer, Jonathan Filley, Ian Shaw, Jeffrey Voorhees, and composer John Williams. It also includes reflections from a wide range of filmmakers and superfans—J.J. Abrams, Emily Blunt, James Cameron, Cameron Crowe, George Lucas, Greg Nicotero, Jordan Peele, Steven Soderbergh, Guillermo del Toro, Robert Zemeckis, and others—on how Jaws influenced their work and the art of filmmaking.

In an emotional tribute, JAWS @ 50 features personal stories from Wendy Benchley, her children Tracy Benchley Turner and Clayton Benchley, and Peter Benchley’s brother Nat Benchley. These stories offer rare insight into the real-life inspirations behind the novel that started it all.

But this isn’t just a retrospective. JAWS @ 50 is a powerful celebration of a cultural and scientific legacy. Through in-depth conversations with leading marine scientists and conservationists—including Philippe Cousteau, Candace Fields, Austin Gallagher, Gibbs Kuguru, Dr. John Mandelman, Brian Skerry, and Dr. Greg Skomal—the film explores how Jaws helped transform public perceptions of sharks, turning fear into fascination and inspiring global conservation efforts that continue to this day.
