TRAMA DEL FILM : Dopo la misteriosa scomparsa della propria bambina, una giovane coppia inizia a ricevere strani video e si rende conto che qualcuno ha filmato la loro vita quotidiana, persino i momenti più intimi. La polizia mette la casa sotto sorveglianza per tentare di sorprendere il voyeur, ma la famiglia inizia a sgretolarsi a mano a mano che i segreti si svelano sotto lo sguardo attento di occhi che li osservano da ogni parte. La piccola Bo, figlia della giovane coppia formata da Junyang e Peiying, scompare da un parco di Singapore, dove la famiglia risiede. A nulla valgono i primi tentativi di indagine sul rapimento della polizia, e i genitori rimangono in un limbo per settimane. Un giorno però ricevono a casa il primo di una serie di misteriosi DVD con dei nuovi filmati che ritraggono i due. Uno stalker li sorveglia, e per giunta le sue immagini rischiano di compromettere il rapporto della coppia portando alla luce i segreti di ciascuno.
Una seconda regia in grande stile per Yeo Siew Hua, che torna dopo aver vinto a Locarno con il precedente A land imagined nel 2018. Il suo terzo lungometraggio è un puzzle tripartito dalle atmosfere soffuse, che parla di sorveglianza, immagini e soprattutto dell'atto del vedere.
Le sue radici affondano orgogliose nel tradizionale genere del surveillance movie, ma in particolare la premessa evoca quella molto simile di Caché di Haneke, in cui la coppia parigina protagonista riceveva dei nastri misteriosi che li ritraeva a casa loro. A Yeo Siew Hua però interessa meno il senso di paranoia e di angoscia e più l'idea generale di una società in cui la sorveglianza è quasi un mezzo relazionale, un tramite che nasconde e tramanda il non detto dell'esperienza umana.
Benché ci sia in ballo il tema orwelliano di un mondo in cui tutto è ormai registrato e le autorità detengono il controllo sull'individuo (specialmente in una città-stato come Singapore), il concetto che una persona tenuta sotto osservazione abbastanza a lungo "anche se non è un criminale, lo diventerà" assume piuttosto dei contorni morali alla Dostoevskij, andando a rivelare le debolezze e gli imbarazzi più reconditi, e configurandosi come conoscenza di sé oltre che dell'altro.
Yeo Siew Hua sceglie una struttura particolare per la sua storia, giocando con la scansione temporale e soprattutto utilizzando la catena osservatore-osservato per spostarsi da un personaggio all'altro, come se anche lui fosse affacciato alla finestra su un enorme condominio narrativo e scorresse con il binocolo le varie scene domestiche che gli si parano di fronte. Così facendo arriva - in una magistrale sequenza rivelatoria - al tranquillo impiegato di un supermercato, Wu, che dà al film gran parte del suo spessore. Non a caso lo interpreta Lee Kang-sheng, straordinario attore taiwanese qui in una delle rare sortite al di fuori del cinema di Tsai Ming-liang, con il quale ha una relazione unica e profondissima.
È lui a essere al centro di un gioco di specchi in cui ogni personaggio è una versione possibile degli altri, anime intrecciate nel tempo che si decodificano attraverso il video. L'atto del vedere, nelle atmosfere contemplative ma penetranti di Yeo Siew Hua, non è frenetico e frammentato come in un vortice alla De Palma; anzi, non si è mai visto un film di sorveglianza tanto sereno e composto, che ha con l'immagine un rapporto quasi spirituale. Una coppia si trova perseguitata da uno stalker in seguito alla scomparsa della figlia.

Young married Singaporean couple Junyang (Chien-Ho Wu) and Peiying (Anicca Panna) must confront the unimaginable when one morning their baby daughter goes missing from the playground. As the police begin their investigation, Junyang and Peiying receive an unsettling package at their doorstep: surreptitious video footage of their daily lives, taken before and after the child’s disappearance. Young married Singaporean couple Junyang (Chien-Ho Wu) and Peiying (Anicca Panna) must confront the unimaginable when one morning their baby daughter goes missing from the playground. As the police begin their investigation, Junyang and Peiying receive an unsettling package at their doorstep: surreptitious video footage of their daily lives, taken before and after the child’s disappearance. Soon, their voyeur neighbor Wu (Lee Kang-sheng, the Taiwanese star of Tsai Ming-liang’s films, in a delicate, multilayered performance) falls under suspicion, revealing multiple secret inner lives among a group of interconnected characters. From this gripping set-up, writer-director Yeo Siew Hua constructs an unpredictable thriller that is as compelled by the mysteries of the human heart as it is by the ambiguities of living in a constant surveillance culture.

Synopsis: After enduring months of a fruitless police investigation into the disappearance of their daughter, a young, estranged couple, Junyang and Peiying, realize they are bring filmed surreptitiously when they begin receiving mysterious packages at their door containing DVDs with footage of their daily lives. The moments captured are unnerving not only for the violation of their privacy, but for what is exposed about Junyang and Peiying's relationship on a most intimate level. Suspecting their voyeur is responsible for taking their daughter, the couple embark on a desperate mission to seek him out, only to find the truth of his identity is more complicated than it seems. Featuring legendary Taiwanese actor Lee Kang-sheng, STRANGER EYES "transmogrifies what looks at first like a creepy crime thriller into something much more tricksy, potent and ultimately puzzling, yet still rooted in recognizable human fragility," (The Hollywood Reporter). Referencing other surveillance thrillers like Michael Haneke's CACHE and Alfred Hitchcock's REAR WINDOW, Singaporean filmmaker Yeo Siew Hua's latest feature is a timely update to the genre as a meditation on voyeurism in the digital age and the contradictory desires around being seen.
