In front of a crowd at the Rotterdam Music Hall, Prince and his band perform 13 numbers, 11 of which are from his double album, Sign 'o' the Times. This is high energy stuff, with neon signs flashing above the stage. Between a few of the numbers, there are vignettes of street life. Three women - Shiela E, Boni Boyer, and Cat - provide rhythmic, vocal, and physical pyrotechnics. Sheena Easton appears in a film within a film, her rock video U Got the Look. In constant motion, never far from center stage, is Prince, Minnesota's charismatic pixy.

„Sanatorium Pod Klepsydrą według Braci Quay” to odważna adaptacja prozy Brunona Schulza autorstwa legendarnych twórców animacji. Wielbicielem ich talentu jest m.in. Christopher Nolan, który poświęcił im jedyny stworzony przez siebie dokument.

Premiera „Sanatorium Pod Klepsydrą według Braci Quay” odbyła się na festiwalu w Wenecji w prestiżowym konkursie Giornate degli Autori, gdzie animacja otrzymała wyróżnienie Musa Cinema & Arts Award. Film otwierał też London Film Festival i znalazł się w czołówce najbardziej docenionych dzieł 2024 International Cinephile Society, zrzeszającego krytyków filmowych z pięciu kontynentów. Niezależna produkcja była tworzona przez dwie dekady w autorskim, niepodrabialnym stylu Braci Quay („Instytut Benjamenta”, „Stroiciel trzęsień ziemi”). Pomysł hołdu dla twórczości Schulza narodził się jeszcze w latach 80. XX wieku, gdy ich krótkometrażowa „Ulica Krokodyli” – jedna z najbardziej nagrodzonych animacji w historii kina – była pierwszą od czasów wersji Wojciecha Jerzego Hasa adaptacją tej wyjątkowej literatury.

Józef odwiedza swego ojca w tajemniczym sanatorium u podnóża Karpat. Wprawdzie ojciec nie żyje, ale w uzdrowisku cofnięto zegary. Doktor Gotard wyjaśnia, że to szczególna opieka nad zmarłymi, by nie zorientowali się, że są martwi. Tam ich życie jeszcze się nie skończyło, czas nie przeminął. Oglądamy zatrzymane wspomnienia w magicznym urządzeniu, pudełku optycznym, które dzięki alchemii, raz do roku, pozwala zobaczyć przez siedem soczewek mistyczne wizje zapisane w siatkówce oka. Wprawione w ruch odsłaniają ukrytą stronę rzeczywistości. Dzięki maszynie Józef spotyka ojca w wielu wcieleniach na różnych etapach życia. Stopniowo godzi się ze stratą i zostaje sam w tajemniczym pociągu, wracając do krainy życia.

Produkcja została zrealizowana po polsku z polską ekipą i aktorami, a jej polską producentką jest Izabela Kiszka-Hoflik. W filmie wystąpili Wioletta Kopańska, Andrzej Kłak oraz Tadeusz Janiszewski, słynny aktor Teatru Ósmego Dnia. Bruno Schulz – autor literackiego pierwowzoru „Sanatorium Pod Klepsydrą” – to jeden z najoryginalniejszych pisarzy i artystów XX wieku. Jego tragiczny los również został zawarty w filmie, bo postać Schulza i jego wyobraźnia inspiruje Braci Quay od początku ich kariery. W pełnometrażowym dziele, które trzeba uznać za summę ich dokonań, stworzyli hybrydę animacji lalkowej i zdjęć aktorskich. Podziw budzi odważna decyzja, na jaką nie zdecydowałby się żaden polski reżyser – umieścić gęstą, poetycką frazę Schulza w oryginale. Daje to rozkosz słuchania hipnotycznej, wciągającej lektury.
