Macon Blair’s Toxic Avenger originally played on the festival scene two years ago, with rave early reviews giving the film a 92% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. The fresh new take on Troma’s cult classic horror movie franchise even screened during San Diego Comic Con last month. But nobody, has seen the Toxic Avenger UNRATED.

The version of The Toxic Avenger trailer about a superhero born from toxic waste, that played at both Fantastic Fest two years ago and at Comic-Con last month was the “R” rated cut of the movie, and what Cineverse is bringing to theaters nationwide on August 29 is the brand new UNRATED cut.

But now, after years of fans demanding to see the movie, theaters have balked at the idea of showing the Toxic Avenger Unrated cut due to its outrageous nature.

As Cineverse VP of Network Strategy Tom Owen explains, “Terrifier 2 and Terrifier 3 both made theaters nervous too, but that worked out pretty well for everyone. We gave Damien Leone full creative freedom to do whatever he wanted with those movies, and we feel the same way about Macon Blair and The Toxic Avengers. If we weren’t going to release the full Unrated cut, then it didn’t make sense to release the movie at all. Some studios fear pushing the limits. We welcome it and by giving filmmakers true creative freedom, we ensure their work reaches audiences in its purest, most uncompromised form.”

To that point, The Toxic Avenger trailer had been sitting on a shelf for two years before Bloody Disgusting and Cineverse picked it up, with some calling the movie “unreleasable” at the time. They probably said the same thing to Lloyd Kaufman about Troma’s Tromeo and Juliet, which was written by James Gunn (yes, that James Gunn). That’s the Troma films way, after all.
